I have tested alot of different scanners from Metrologic and would have to say my favorite was the Metrologic MS1890 Focus. This scanner price range is right around $500. With this scanner, you will get an affordable bar code scanner by Metrologic that won't ruin your budget. This barcode scanner is able to withstand falls of over 6 feet! In other words, this bad boy is tough and rugged and will last for years.
I also tested the Metrologic MS9540 Voyager barcode scanner. This barcode scanner is in the $150 price range. This barcode scanner has an intuitive scanning system that is great for point of sale and document processing.
